ProTerra Maroc
Cichlid, algae and Salicornia from the desert
Proven agricultural eco-cycle system intelligently applied and smartly implemented
Pro Terra Maroc stands for sustainable aquaculture and regenerative agriculture. We farm African tilapia in an ideal climate in Morocco and integrate fish and plant farming by replicating natural food cycles. In this way, we are doing our part to meet the growing protein needs of the world's population.
The impact of our farm
we can feed with a farm with proteins from fish and algae.
that is 165,000 fish fillets and other products every day.
we save through our sustainable food production. As much as a forest of 8 million beech trees binds in one year.*
of fresh water compared conventional inland plants - whether aquaculture, pond farming or cattle farms.
our farm is the size of 210 soccer fields. Former desert area, which we green and use for agriculture.
ProTerra Maroc helps close the protein gap
So that natural food, sustainably produced, becomes a matter of course for everyone
The world's population is rising steadily, and with it the demand for food. In addition changepeople are changing their eating and are consuming more protein. Experts predict that demand for food will increase by more than 50 percent by 2050, and demand for animal protein by as much as 70 percent.
If we practiced our agriculture with current methods and forms of processing, the worldwide undersupply of humanity with protein - an essential component of a balanced diet - would begin as early as 2028. In addition, we as a human race would no longer be able to no longer be able to develop sufficient additional arable land. We are forced to reinvent our food production. Otherwise, the protein shortage will be followed by a nutrition crisis.
New approaches to food production, like that of Pro Terra Maroc, are in demand. This is how we help meet the increasing protein needs of all of us a little more - our daily drive. We depend only on seawater, sun and climate - we are just "really green".
Covering the protein needs of mankind
Proven agricultural eco-loop system smartly designed and consistently implemented
We grow African tilapia (Tilapia) in the Moroccan desert at during the year constantly warmn temperatures - about 25 degrees - on. The temperatures following steps cultivated plants feed we to our fish. With it closes closes the cycle of our Polyculture. Or in a sentence: We form the natural food cycle According to.
Chained three-stage polyculture:
- Stage: Using renewable energy, we pump saltwater into flow-optimized fish tanks without further treatment. There, the young fish (fingerlings, African cichlids) bred in our own hatchery grow into ready-to-catch fish - all in natural stocking densities for stress-free growth.
- Stage: The nutrient-rich process water from the fish is fed into the subsequent algae tanks. The algae filter these nutrients out of the water and convert them into rapid growth.
- Stage: Plants in the desert soil are specifically irrigated with the process water from the algae. The algae and plants (salicornia) act as biofilters, absorbing almost all the ingredients of the two previous value-adding stages. The little liquid that the plants do not absorb seeps into the desert sand and flows back into the sea. Our own plants and algae are harvested, dried, mixed into fish food and fed to our tilapias. They love these delicacies. Thus the cycle is closed.
Pro Terra Maroc raises its fish in tanks with natural salt water from the sea. In this medium multiply viruses and bacteria usually do not. The basinn stand iseparated from the environment andseparated and from the the risk of entry of pests from the outside protected. This means that we will only have to use antibiotics and pesticides in the smallest quantities in exceptional cases.
With the cultivation of salicornia and other plants we renaturalize the centuries fallow for centuries desert soil. As the number of cultivation cycles increases, the formation of humus will to fertile arable land enrich, according to experts.
The adult fish are processed by experienced local fish filleting service providers. Part of the fish fillets is sold fresh locally, the rest of the yield goes to Europe and North America as frozen goods.
First impression of our farm in Dakhla, Morocco
On 150 hectares Pro Terra cultivates Maroc a farm that will produce a total of 24,000 tons of African tilapia as food fish and 576 tons of microalgae after completion - without any negative impact on the local ecosystems.
Consistent temperatures and naturally tempered seawater, ensure low energy consumption, which is covered by our own photovoltaic system. Fresh water is only needed in small quantities. It is produced in a sustainable osmosis plant and with solar energy. obtained.
Plan concept of the farm (complete structure)
Further farms of the same design are being planned. Potential sites have already been identified.
Our products
Cichlid
As a native species, cichlids are considered hardy herbivores that thrive in saltwater.
It is already impossible to imagine the USA without the tilapia as a popular food fish, and it is also gaining popularity in Europe thanks to its firm protein-rich meat.
Microalgae
Microalgae (e.g. spirulina) are known as food supplements and are gaining more and more recognition as an alternative to animal protein. From part of the microalgae harvest and other plant products of the farm, Pro Terra Maroc produces its own fish feed, which in turn is used in fish farming.
Salicornia
Salicornia, also called sea asparagus, is a crunchy slightly salty vegetable that is particularly popular with fish in coastal regions. As a halophyte - a plant that thrives in saline soils - it is also native to the Moroccan desert and makes an excellent addition to our polyculture.
Pro Terra Maroc operates its own fish hatchery
The cultured juveniles grow to market maturity in 7-9 months in the polyculture tanks.
The animals are kept in low stocking densities. The use of chemicals and hormones is avoided and antibiotics are not administered prophylactically.
Innovative sensors in the tanks measure the water quality around the clock and provide information about fish behavior and health.

clean & green holdings, as a management and investment company,- takes over a majority stake in Pro Terra Maroc. The experienced managers and entrepreneurs Björn Heyden and Marc Wenger support the team of Pro Terra Maroc under the leadership of founder Michael Wielage in strategy, business management and financing. The common goal: sustainable food production for the future.
2021/ 2022
In the year 2019 our sustainable polyculture successfully tested. With the test results ,the concept will be further optimized and prepared for implementation inthe following months. In the year 2022 begins the construction of the tank and water treatment system for the cichlidbreeding. A 15,000 m3 water reservoir will also be built. Based on the cultivation of its own garden and the planting of Salicornia-fields, the own feed production is started. The cichlid breeding is put into operation.
2023
At the beginning of 2023, the first of twelve similar modules for fish and algae breeding will be built. Each module consists of five large tanks. The supply contracts with the suppliers have been signed and all permits for construction have been obtained.
To date, almost 4 million euros have been raised from impact investors, the founding team and the clean & green managers. As a result, 68% of the necessary investments for the first module have already been financed and much of the preparatory work for the first standard module and the further expansion of the farm (general water supply, buildings, preparation of the fields) has been completed.
The remaining amount for the investments of the first module will be collected with the help of a crowd-investing campaign on the Conda platform.
Development of the key business indicators of the 1st module Pro Terra Maroc 2021 - 2029 (€)
Development of the key business indicators of the 1st module Pro Terra Maroc 2021 - 2029 (€)
The construction of a farm is capital intensive with the purchase and construction of basins and technology, as well as the preparation of the subsoil. The investment for this work is 4.5 million € for the 1st module. After the investment of the in the crowdInvesting-campaign, we will be able we will be able to put our first standard module into operation.
Another 11 of these standard modules are still planned at this location for implementation in subsequent years.
After a construction of this first module, we will be able to catch and sell about 500 t of tilapia this year. In the next few years, this quantity from this module will increase to 2,000 t annually. Conservatively calculated, this results in a turnover of € 1.75 million this year to € 7 million in regular operation. Once production has ramped up, we expect this to be as early as 2024, which means that the profit for the 1st module will grow by around 40% per year in the period 2023 - 2029, the term of the subordinated loan. If the commissioning of the module, its operation and the marketing of the catch proceeds according to plan, we expect the return of the funds to be raised in this crowdfunding campaign already by the end of 2024 (payback period approx. 18 months).
Operating funds for subsequent generations of fish can be financed from the net cash inflow from the sale of the catch.
